Ok, so it's been 6 months. A lot has happened. Let's see...

January: Ah, to be 21! Now I can be drunk in public, legally. The snow tried to ruin my going-out-to-the-bar experience, but we just moved the party. It's a good thing the 19th was MLK day too, so I could sleep in the next day. Started new classes, including a graduate-level music history course. Tough stuff.

February: Not much happened. Did my homework, practiced excessively, started Cosí Fan Tutte rehearsals.

March: Started with the first symphony concert (concert aria winners and Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony). Next was my recital jury, a quiet spring break in Raleigh and Tristan's back surgery. While he started the healing process, I was practicing away getting ready for my junior solo recital and selling my soul to opera rehearsals. MLS season started back up. The 22nd was the recital, it went really well and I enjoyed myself. The week following were four performances of the opera, pretty exhausting.

April: Snow in Boone in April...pretty rare, but it happened. ASU sent out an e-mail telling us that class was NOT cancelled. It was kind of mean. Played a wedding at Crestwood. Stressful as usual. Final symphony concert (Beethoven Overture to Prometheus and Mahler 1) was hardcore and emotional. First time I've ever come close to tears in a concert before. I'll never forget it. Boone skipped spring and went directly from snow to 80 degrees.

May: Finals. Rachel graduated and we had four nights straight of parties. Spent a week in Raleigh. Went to the NC Zoo. Summer classes started, biology and music theory V (the final level)!

June: Classes. So You Think You Can Dance started. Went to see No Doubt in concert, it was amazing. Solo wedding gig. Ended up with A's in the classes. Drove to Atlanta to watch the Red Sox @ Braves game with my family.

So now I'm done with classes for the summer, and that is a good thing. This week I have to start practicing new music, packing a few boxes (winter clothes, mostly) and beginning my grad school search. On Friday, Tristan and I will drive down to Greenville, SC for July 4 and stay until Sunday. After another week of my summer projects, it's off to the beach! This year my family returns to Hilton Head Island, it's been two years since I've been to my favorite beach and I'm excited to go back. Yay, summer!

Merry Christmas! (Belatedly)

I hope everyone is having a nice holiday. Raleigh is fine, I am doing my absolute best to not do anything strenuous. Well, besides practice. But that's not supposed to be strenuous...right? Ha! Anyway, audition music is out and of course it's all Mahler 1. It is such a relief to be playing something German (ish...ok, Austrian) and Romantic, even if it is going to kick my butt. But I think I might not take over 18 hours this semester so that I can put more spare time into my recital and orchestra! Oh busy life.

Christmas turned out well, I got everything asked for which was wonderful! Let's see...

New cell phone - LG touchscreen!
George Foreman grill!!! The kind with the different plates that you can make everything with. So exciting.
A Crock-pot. Yay! Time for chili, barbecue and soup!
Books, as always. Of course that didn't stop me from taking advantage of the Borders sale today.
An excellent pair of boots that sadly have to be taken back because they don't fit my freak feet! Boo.
A new music bag, a nice one.
A white scarf with a black treble clef design.
A new purse from the artisan place in Cambridge.
Chopsticks! Mom says everyone should have their own pair of chopsticks.
A little owl playing the violin, to add to the collection!
Leather gloves for those cold Boone mornings.
That about covers it, except for one that I had to pass off to my mother because it was a fashion much more fitting to a woman in her early 50s than a woman in her early 20s. There's always one, right? Oh, well.

T and I won't do Christmas until we both get back to Boone. He's in Michigan now with the brothers and mom, then he and N are driving down to Boone and potentially continuing to Rocktown (jealous). I still have no clue what I'm doing for New Year's, there are several parties here in Raleigh and some in Boone but I'm not sure I'm interested. We'll see, I guess. But for now, I'm going to try out the George!

YES! The semester of evil is over!!!

I would definitely say that this has been the most difficult semester for me, juggling my major, several classes for my minor and a foreign language class that is not required but I need anyway. However, I had the most fun this semester...probably explains my sleep deprivation! But yahoo, it's over!

Next semester I am only taking one history class. But, I am taking the grad level music history survey course (!!!) so that I can pass my entrance exams to grad school. Yay musicology, but yikes.

Grades breakdown:
All A's (Applied Violin, Music History, Postwar France, German, Conducting, Orchestra, Ballet) except one freaking B+ (World Since 1945, and I got this grade because the teacher was obsessed with format and didn't really care about content. STUPID!). So this means I have a 3.88 for the semester which makes me happy! Although I am still mad about the B+ (.5 GPA difference between that and an A-! Bullshit!).

Heading to Hickory tomorrow for my last gig (Sunday morning) and then back to Raleigh. I am tired of doing anything, but I'll probably try and work while I'm there.

Exactly one month from today I will be 21! Free to go to bars again...thank you Boone Liquor Law. Although this is also not good, because now I am going to start spending more money. Boo.

I need to go pack!

The semester is almost over! Exams start next Thursday and then done on Wednesday. Thank goodness!

Looking for apartments sucks, a lot. I blame the economy!

I think it's about time I got a new job. Preferably on campus. I haven't worked at the theater in about a month (yay school leave) but I'm supposed to go back soon and I don't know if I can do it. Music library, please hire me?

Tonight is the holiday concert, aka cheese-fest 2008. But, after that, we're having a techno dance party! T is the dj, which is neat. It will be good times.

This weekend we're premiering a work for orchestra called A Child's Garden of Dreams, Book II by David Maslanka. Maslanka is a really cool, nice old guy...but his piece is near impossible to play. It has been such a struggle, and I feel bad for the guy because as a composer your music is your life, but it's just...well, ridiculous.

So once exams end, I have to stay here for a gig until the 21st and then heading to Raleigh for Christmas. Then it is January and in January I turn 21! On MLK day! Yay!

This journal has been basically cleaned out. I went through all my old entries and deleted early posts, posts I regret and posts that remind me of not-so-awesome times. Moving on...

I am trying to remember all of the things that have happened since 16 January! There is quite a lot. So I'll just make a list:

Turned 20.
Got a kitten! Felix The Cat Mendelssohn. He is now no longer a kitten, but still cute as shit.
Played Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony. Pretty sweet.
Had an all around great semester! Good grades, good violin-ing, good times were had.
N and M came to stay for most of the summer in Boone, so that was fun! (Until M had to leave, which was sad)
Went to the Outer Banks with my family and T. It was fun but the water was too cold!
N, A and R all moved away to their respective futures...jealous!
Worked a lot this summer but somehow didn't make any money...
T and I moved into the same apartment complex...a gas-saving move! Relatively nice places but too expensive.
Started 3rd year of college! Yay almost done!
Had a lot of computer issues (hard-drive crash and water spillage) but that is all fixed now!

And as of right now I am in Nashville, TN for the National American Musicological Society Conference! These past couple days have been so awesome. I love to hear all of the different papers and talk to musicologists about their schools...yay networking! This just makes me want to go to grad school that much more! I can't wait.

Ta.

The climbing trip was a roller coaster. But mostly, I LOVED IT.

Here's how it all went down:

Thursday, 12/27: Left Boone, drove to Slade, KY (aka The Red). Got there after dark, made some dinner and went to sleep psyched about the cold goodness and the clear skies.

Friday, 12/28: Woke up to what we now like to call Les Mis, because it was NASTY outside. It started just being cold and damp and gross, which then turned into a full on downpour. We set up a huge tarp over our tents to try and wait it out, but eventually the waters came creeping in to our sleeping ground. So around 11am or so, we left Doom, KY and began to make our drive down to Wartburg, TN (aka The Obed). Got to the Obed after dark, set up our stuff, made dinner and went to sleep once again happy for clear skies and also for the warmer temperatures.

Saturday, 12/29: GORGEOUS day. Sunny, clear, not to cold but not hot either, peeeeerfect for climbing! Unfortunately, we just so happened to miss the turn down the right trail to our destination, and ended up hiking along the rock for about 2 hours and it was rough. We finally made it, only to realize that three of the four of us forgot our harnesses. Smart! So the boys, being our heroes, hiked back up the real trail (not the death march) to the car to get our stuff and bring some lunch. By the time they got back and we had eaten, it was about 4pm, about an hour until sundown. Then the boys got on two really shitty climbs, neither of which would have been anything R or I could manage. And after that it was super close to dark, so we hiked out. :( At least we got lots of exercise? But not climbing which is all kinds of boo.

Sunday, 12/30: Woke up to gloom. Colder and pretty foggy, but we were determined to climb so we hiked out to the boulder fields. Sadly, most everything was wet, and we were all pretty tired from the death march the day before. We all got on a few climbs, had some good go's but all in all a pretty pathetic day. A and R's tent was only a two season, and not a three so they were freezing at night, and it was just nasty and only going to get colder and wetter so we drove back to Boone. It was depressing but we had Olive Garden on the way home and hot showers!!!

New Year's Eve: All the bars in Boone were CLOSED except two, one that had about four people inside and the other an over 21. LAAAAME! So we went and woke up CD, watched the ball drop, drank champagne and watched the fireworks over App Ski Mountain. Oh, and we all saw a shooting star. Neat!

1/1-1/4: Nothing, lots of snow and below 20 degree coldness. Saw Charlie Wilson's War (awesome movie).

Saturday, 1/5: Left for Lafayette, GA (aka Rocktown!). Got there (surprise!) at dark, set up our tents and then went out for some night climbing. It was cool, didn't climb much but still had a good time.

Sunday, 1/6: Nice day, clear and warm. Did a problem I couldn't finish the night before, yay! Worked on some other stuff, the boys did some cool things (including a SCARY highball which made my heart stop), had an all around great day!

Monday, 1/7: Beautiful day. It hadn't rained the night before but for some reason a lot of the rock was really wet and yucky. :( But there were a few things dry. I climbed the Scoop! Apparently a Rocktown classic, and a V3 (sort of) which is probably the highest grade I've climbed. Yay! Boys did some insanely hard stuff, really impressive, I love how strong they are. Eventually gave up trying to find dry problems and left for camp. Accidentally stole some people's firewood, but hey, it was their fault. Fair game if you don't claim it!

Tuesday, 1/8: Les Mis again. Tried to see if anything was worth climbing. There wasn't, so we drove up to Greenville to stay at Daddy Hall's for the night and hang out with N and M.

Today, 1/9: Drove to Chimney Rock/Lake Lure to climb at the Bald with M in tow. Really nice day, super warm and blue skies! The girls and I worked on some pretty cool stuff, it was fun. Eventually R and M had to leave, luckily it was good timing because I had an interesting slab fall that gave me a nice bruise and rock-burned my entire left arm. Didn't hurt terribly, but after that I was pretty much done. Left with the boys and now we're back in Boone! About to shower and eat some delicious dinner that the boys cooked, watch a movie and sleep in a real bed. :) Then to Raleigh tomorrow until Sunday when T and I are coming back here for schooool! Yahoo!

So that was the play by play. Maybe I will post pictures soon!

Discovery! Always eat two bananas before a performance. Yay potassium!

The quartet recital was AMAZING. I mean absolutely, marvelously amazing. C and I rocked out some Bartok duets, and the Debussy was probably the best we've ever played it. I felt SO good about that performance, and I'm really glad that we did it. And glad that it's over, ha!

Later on that week, I played in studio class, and for the first time in my LIFE (yes, life) I was not nervous. I wasn't shaky, or freakishly sweaty in my hands, or ANYTHING bad...I just stood up, played it all (from memory, with only two or three slips!) and was done. It was an awesome experience. Yay!

Then this weekend ASU made it to the playoffs (more gaaaaames!), N was in town and I played on AE's recital...also the reception for that was the first time that I've been in a real house in Boone (you know, not one rented out by a college kid) and it was beautiful.

This week was just ridiculous, I think I've lost my mind, but that's ok. It's break for now, back to Boone this weekend for the game, and then back to work until exams!

Oooook, it has definitely been awhile. Life has been super, SUPER busy!

First of all, the most exciting thing that happened to me this month was the trip to Michigan!!! It was AWESOME. We drove all through the night to get to Sand Creek (where T's mom lives) around 4am. Then we woke up around 9 to go the THE GAME! I can't even describe how incredible that game was. NONE of us had any idea that App would actually beat Michigan! We were surrounded by Michigan fans and I think they were all pretty shocked (especially the ones in front of us, they cried at the end...yikes)...but anyone who was there or watched the game showed us some respect. After all, we held our own, which it seems many people don't realize....saying things like "How could Michigan lose to a team like Appalachian State?!" Because we're a great team, that's how! Assholes. Haha, anyway, it was an amazing experience and I'm so glad I was there!

Also on that weekend, I got to ride T's horse with him which was soooo cool! She is gorgeous. Then we went to Cedar Point!!! So much fun, lots of rides, and the boys almost got in a fight with an old dude who kept looking down my shirt...aah! It was crazy :)

So now I'm back in Boone! I'm busy all the time. If I'm not practicing, I'm studying, and if I'm not doing that, I'm dancing! I think all of that caught up with me this weekend, because I got a pretty nasty cough and strained some joints in my ribs...so today I'm taking the day off and resting so that I can be back on my game!

Oh yea...FALL IS HERE!!! It's beautiful and cool outside, and I've got my fall candle AND all I want is some yummy yummy pumpkin pie! Yay for fall lovely-ness :) Tourists will be here soon for the leaves!

bob was like that - a real asshole when it came to reading into things. he liked to wrap things up into neat little packages that implied the world. you see, sean was fucked up - not the world, the world was just confused. and not the world exactly, just the people in it...

How many Bush Administration officials does it take to change a lightbulb?

None. There is nothing wrong with that lightbulb; its conditions
are improving every day. Any reports of its lack of incandescence are
delusional spin from the liberal media. That lightbulb has served honorably, and anything you say undermines the overall lighting effort. Why do you hate freedom?
